Headline: Avalanche Warning issued December 9 at 11:53AM MST by NWS Missoula MT
Description: AVWMSO

The following message is transmitted at the request of Idaho Panhandle
Avalanche Center Sandpoint ID.

...AVALANCHE WARNING BY THE IDAHO PANHANDLE AVALANCHE CENTER REMAINS IN EFFECT...

The Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center in Sandpoint has issued a BACKCOUNTRY
AVALANCHE WARNING for the following areas:

NWS Missoula MT -
MTZ001 (MTZ001)

NWS Spokane WA -
ID 017 (Bonner County)...ID 021 (Boundary County)

* WHAT...An Avalanche Warning remains in effect until Wednesday 4
AM. Very dangerous avalanche conditions developed overnight and
will last though Tuesday as heavy, wet snowfall transitioned to
heavy rain along with strong winds.

* WHERE...The Selkirk Mountains, West and East Cabinet Mountains,
and the Silver Valley-Bitterroot Mountains.

* WHEN...In effect from Tue 6:00 PST to Wed 4:00 PST.

* IMPACTS... A potent atmospheric river characterized by near-
historic moisture is introducing a "firehose" of moisture into
North Idaho and Northwestern Montana. The rain line rose to
around 7,000 to 7,500 feet overnight Monday and will saturate
recent snowfall and overload pre-existing weak snow layers. It
will be very likely for backcountry travelers to trigger
avalanches and natural avalanches are likely. Avalanches can
break wide across terrain features and run long distances to
lower elevations.

* PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Travel in avalanche
terrain is not recommended during this period.

Consult http://www.idahopanhandleavalanche.org/ or www.avalanche.org for
more detailed information.

Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area
of this or any avalanche center.

NWS Spokane WA -
ID 017 (Bonner County)...ID 021 (Boundary County)

* WHAT...An Avalanche Warning is in effect from Monday 4 PM to Tuesday 4
PM. Very dangerous avalanche conditions will develop overnight and last

strong winds. You can very easily trigger avalanches large enough to bury

moisture will introduce a firehose of moisture into North Idaho and
Northwestern Montana. The rain line will rise to around 7,000 to 7,500 feet
overnight Monday and will saturate recent snowfall and overload pre-
existing weak snow layers. It will be very likely for backcountry travelers
to trigger avalanches and natural avalanches are likely. Avalanches can
break wide across terrain features and run long distances to lower
elevations.

* PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Travel in avalanche terrain is not
recommended during this period.

Description: ESFMSO

A prolonged atmospheric river is expected to bring periods of heavy
rain for western Montana Monday night through Thursday. Rising snow
levels will lead to a rain-on-snow event for elevations below 7,000
feet Monday night into Tuesday morning. Precipitation rates will
briefly decrease Tuesday afternoon before a second surge of moisture
arrives Tuesday night into Thursday. During the second surge, snow
levels will be lower initially, ranging from 3,500 to 5,000 feet
with some slushy snow accumulations across northwest Montana
valleys, but will then rise to 6,000 to 8,000 feet Wednesday into
Thursday. By Thursday, significant precipitation totals are
forecast, with 1 to 4 inches in the valleys and 5 to 8 inches in the
mountains, with locally higher totals over mountain crests.

Landslides in areas of steep terrain and minor flooding in urban and
poor-drainage areas are possible. Storm drains and ditches may
become clogged with debris. You may want to preemptively shovel snow
away from your homes. Watch basements for moisture intrusion.
